tony royster...I was trying to remember his name. Not really giggin either. But, at least he had groove and played some music at that age.
No I don't have names or clips of these kids, but honestly, it's more common than ya think! What he's playing is nothing. It's good for someone who's not a pro, and it's all cute cause he's young. But there are kids out there who can actually scare you with their music skills.

What freaked me out is, well, was that i was thinking the kid is about 8 (or whatever) and seeing this little guy pull stuff off that shouldn't come from a body that big... i mean, the sticks are almost thicker than his arms.

What is scary for me to think about is this kid blowing chops for another 10 years and THEN becoming musical. I mean, i have to work at both at the same time, but to have someone step into the game with all their chops together at such a young age, and THEN be able to focus on musicality... that stuff wigs me out.

I figured this kid was about 3, or so, years younger than Royster... if that was the case then that sh*t is pretty scary. If he truly is 15 then i feel bad for him cause he looks barely 10.

Regardless, if he stopped working on chops right now, he would have some good stuff to work with in which to build upon his musical side.

If you think that kid was hot, you should check out those videos of Isaiah Williams at 6 years old jamming with Victor Wooten. I think he's about 9 by now. Google him.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Nothing huh? Gimmie names, names i tell you!

If it was more common than we think, then why was Royster a little phenom? Because it isn't that common... if he is 15, then yes... it is. If you are talking about kids like 10 and 11 blowing chops like that, i ain't buying it. I know the guy who won the GC drum-off this year, and he made it out of Regionals here in Seattle when he was 12, and let me tell you... that guy has chops NOW at 21, but, when he was 12, nothing like Royster Jr. This guy who won that competition this year wasn't that hot when he was 12, but now he is this little chopsmeister... if there are all these bad-ass kids running around, then why is there any to-do about this guy now (who wasn't all that compared to these other kids mentioned in the same breath as Royster)?

What i am saying is, if this phenomenon was more common, shouldn't this bar be higher by a noticeable level?

Sorry peeps,
I just don't see what chops you're talking about. He can play fast, and yeah he's very young. But I just don't see or hear anything other than some sloppy hands and double bass.
When chops aren't applied in a musical way, they do nothing for me. Besides, he wasn't pulling anything off we haven't seen in average players, including myself. I didn't see any 32nd note singles between his hands and feet.
What I liked about Tony R at that age, was his groove. That's something to be envious of. Someone who's very young and has a natural groove and musicality. I don't care about sloppy fast drumming.

WOW. Pretty impressive. At about 2:30 or something he plays the groove from a song by dream theater, called 6:00 Listen here. He definately likes his music.

He's really fast. Heavily Portnoy influenced, i reckon. Cool.

Poor kid.......

He's being pulled apart like a wing of Kentucky Fried Chicken here on HOD, and he doesn't even know it.

I think it's great the kid is playing. He's having fun and hopefully being supported by his parents and a good teacher. Ya know.... some of the greats (i.e. vinnie) didn't even start playing drums until they were 13. So as far as early development is concerned, you really don't know whats going to come of it till they hit there later teens or early twenties.

I think there was a similar topic before and some of these "child wonders" grew up to not really do much in the way of music. So I guess time will tell with this lil' guy.

That is all i am trying to say is that it is pretty damn impressive to be a kid pullin' off stuff that you still hear people alot older trying to play. Ok, fine, he ain't pulling off stuff that hasn't been played before. I am with LD and Joe's Mech on this one... it is f*n cool to hear a little kid pulling off chopsy stuff ike that.

It is amazing to see how many freakin' insecure posers come out of the woodwork to knock a kid who is playing cool stuff for his age. He is closer to what is considered exceptional for his age than most drummers out there are for their's.

Could i blow this kid outta the water, of freakin' course, and so could everyone else on here... BUT, when i was his age, i never even touched a drumstick, and if i would've seen him when i was that age, i NEVER woulda picked one up, cause he is scary for being so young and small... would've scared me outta playing.

I am guessing most people on here talking sh*t haven't taught too much in their day.
